Ballroom Dancing

A fund raising event for Cystic Fibrosis

2 dance teachers provided

With Val & Nigel Hughes (winners of the ACT 2006 Individual Community Contribution Award!)

Do you watch Strictly Ballroom and Dancing with the Stars and wish you could dance?

This joint initiative course between Val and Nigel Hughes and Erindale College will make getting on the floor a breeze, impress your friends next time you attend a wedding or just dancing at your local club. In eight weeks you will be able to: Slow Rhythm, Waltz, Cha Cha and Jive we will also teach two New Vogue dances. You will learn all this in a relaxed and supportive environment while helping people with Cystic Fibrosis.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common life threatening, recessive genetic condition affecting Australian children. CF affects primarily the lungs and digestive system, however with improved medication and treatment life expectancy has been extended considerably. CF is an inherited condition, for a child to be born with CF both parents must be genetic carriers for CF, they do not have Cystic Fibrosis themselves. Approximately 1 in every 2500 babies will be born with CF, one born every four days.

Our grandson Hamish has Cystic Fibrosis and we will donate all money paid to us for teaching to the Cystic Fibrosis Association for research and the ongoing support of people and families with CF.

Val and Nigel have been dancing for seven years and Nigel has been teaching for three. We use to go to a wedding, get on the dance floor, tread on each other’s feet and then sit down for the rest of the night. Now we go dancing three times a week, dancing has provided us with a great circle of friends. Canberra has well established dancing groups, with most of our local clubs having live bands every Friday and Saturday nights. We are members of the Canberra City Dance Club who hold social dances every Thursday night and one Saturday a month at the Harmonie German Club. The dancing is a mixture of Social Ballroom and New Vogue Dancing. New Vogue Sequence Dancing was developed in Australia during the 30's, and is a very important part of the dance scene. New Vogue Sequence Dancing has so much to offer the social dancer, with limited knowledge and after a very short period of time beginners are able to learn and feel at ease with this style of dancing.
