Calligraphy-Uncial

Beginning or continuing calligraphy courses provide students with a general understanding of a variety of scripts which are based on their historical beginnings and have been adapted for a more contemporary or practical approach for calligraphers today. Classes are relaxed, friendly and supportive and students will encouraged to work to their own levels of experience and ability. If possible, practice between classes would be beneficial to the student.

A basic writing kit comprising of black ink, a selection of nibs and suitable writing paper will be necessary. .Aspects of colour, layout and design will also be introduced and small projects will be completed along the way. Students will be encouraged to “try” different art materials supplied by  by the tutor.  A full materials list follows.

 Uncial

A medieval script which was widely used as a bookhand during the 3rd-9th centuries and  became the official hand of the Christian Church. Many fine examples have survived and you may have seen the very famous and beautiful Book of Kells on display at the NGA a few years back.

A contemporary simplified combination uncial will be taught first followed by a traditional half-uncial. Decorated letters and a modern experimental version will also be explored.
