Calligraphy (italic)

Beginning or continuing calligraphy courses provide students with a general understanding of a variety of scripts which are based on their historical beginnings and have been adapted for a more contemporary or practical approach for calligraphers today. Classes are relaxed, friendly and supportive and students will be encouraged to work to their own levels of experience and ability. If possible, practice between classes would be beneficial to the student.

A basic writing kit comprising of black ink, a selection of nibs and suitable writing paper will be necessary. These can be supplied by the tutor if needed (approx $55). Aspects of colour, layout and design will also be introduced and small projects will be completed along the way. Students will be encouraged to try different art materials supplied by the tutor.

Italic

The italic style of writing, developed in 1420, has become one of the most versatile of all the historical hands and can be used for a wide range of practical purposes as well as being used in a contemporary decorative manner.
