Computing for Beginners

Get to grips with using a mouse and find out about opening and saving files, word processing, the Internet and emailing. This course is for all ages.

This course is for people who presently have little or no confidence or knowledge in using computers and want to be taken through at a very slow, calm, sensible pace.

In other words, this is a beginners course designed for people who have little or no computing experience or keyboard skills. It provides a useful background to the type of applications of which computers are capable. It is based on the Windows operating system and the Microsoft Office series of programs including Word Processing and Spreadsheets applications. However those with earlier versions of Windows and Microsoft Office packages will not be disadvantaged.

Pre-requisite: Nil

Areas covered:

 Terminology and how computers work without getting too technical. Introduction to the computer and practicing  mouse control.

 Introduction to word processing (MS Word) and learning how to produce, save and print a document.

 More word processing and learning how to find the document that you saved last week.

 Spreadsheets - production and printing of a budget using automatic calculations.

 More spreadsheets (create a simple home budget).

 Introduction to the Internet – what it is, how it works and how you can get the most from it. Introduction to  electronic mail and the Internet - sending an email and surfing the net. Students are taught how to instantly access  information anywhere in the world in a matter of seconds.

 More surfing and navigation exercises of the Internet (do not bring your surfboard!) . Sending and receiving email.

 Open – More practice at sending and receiving email. Course summary and recap.
