Pilates (level 2)

"Where the art of injury management meets the science"

Come and do one of our sensibly priced 8-week pilates courses here at Erindale College.

What is the Pilates Method of body conditioning?

Imagine an exercise program that you look forward to, that engages you, and that leaves you refreshed and alert with a feeling of physical and mental well-being. The Pilates Method (pronounced puh-LAH-teez) of body conditioning will do all this...and more.

Developed in the 1920s by the legendary physical trainer and founder of the Pilates Studio(tm), Joseph H. Pilates, The Pilates Method is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength for the total body without building bulk. Not surprisingly, some of the first people to use the Pilates Method were dancers such as Martha Graham and George Balanchine.

The Pilates Method is not just exercise, however. It is a series of controlled movements engaging your body and mind.

Develop core strength, long, lean muscles, reduce stress and increase energy through this program. Over the course of the 8 weeks, the basic principles of the Pilates method will be introduced. We will be relating these traditions to one another in gentle sequences that will highlight both the interesting similarities and the beautiful uniqueness of the ways of learning the fundamental dynamics of the human body. Beginner modifications will be clearly demonstrated. Ample time will be given to feel the benefits of the poses and rhythmic movements.

With special attention to form, functional strength and flexibility, Pilates is a series of non-impact, controlled movements which promote muscular strength and balance by focusing on the body's core of the abdominals and back. Integrating overall trunk, pelvic and scapular stabilization, Pilates is an excellent way to teach proper body alignment and posture while enhancing muscular stabilization and restoring flexibility and natural movements. This course will educate therapists in the basic Pilates principals with clinical applications that show how this alternative body conditioning program can be integrated into a physical therapy setting for both injury rehabilitation and prevention.

Upon completion of the course, the attendees will be able to:

Understand and use the Pilates fundamentals, principles and mat exercises

Have the ability to see and correct body imbalances due to improper muscle recruitment and compensation patterns
