Wood Projects & Restoration

(Max. 12 students per class)

This course aims to give you the basic skills and knowledge to produce an item to your own design. But it also caters for continuing students. This course will allow students to construct projects of their own choice. Consultation with the instructor before the course will ensure a successful and productive term. This program will cater for Woodwork enthusiasts from beginners level to more advanced level.

For those that have done woodwork before, eg. with the practical knowledge picked up in woodworking skills – basic, you will further develop your skills with a new project, while our tutor guides you through the various stages of construction. The project is a bedside table with door and drawer. You will need to supply all of your own materials, and if you are unsure what to get and how much it will cost, don’t worry that is what the first session is about – identifying what each of the students want to make and to guide them on where to go to get the materials with estimates on costings.

Your course is an introduction to woodworking skills covering:

  1. Safety
  2. Tools
  3. Materials
  4. Design

Your course will be structured around a number of woodworking activities, giving you experience in selection, maintenance and use of appropriate tools. You will gain an appreciation of furniture design.

You will be taught by demonstration, group and individual instruction with ongoing guidance from your tutor.

Woodwork Projects provides an opportunity for beginners but also for persons with more advanced levels of woodworking skills, to build small to medium sized timber pieces of furniture. The program is designed to meet the needs and requirements of individual female students regardless of their existing skill level. As a result, all projects are sourced and selected by yourself and if need be, technical assistance is given during the various stages of design development, construction and finishing.

The first session addresses practices/safety issues in the workshop and the 'general' use of the machinery, however, you will also be taken through safely operating the machinery as the need arises, on a one to one basis. Individual designs and material selection can be further developed in this session. If you have a detailed design and the materials, then work can begin almost immediately. Books and magazines hosting woodwork design concepts are also provided.

Previous students have completed bedside tables, dining tables, coffee tables, privacy screens, bed heads, electronic entertainment units, cottage art items and outdoor furniture. Remember though that 8 times 3 hours is not a lot of time so given this restriction, completion of the projects needs to be an achievable outcome unless you are considering re enrolling in the next terms course in order to continue on with an individual project.

Clothing suitable for workshop environment plus sturdy footwear should be worn.

Students are to supply all materials and sundry items for their projects.

NOTE: A storage area for projects under construction is available at the College. Consumables including items such as wood, sandpaper, screws etc need to be provided by yourself.
